SORRY FOR THE DELAY

After a great time at Rishi Valley and a wonderful send off from their staff and students we made the long road trip back down to the Bangalore area. To the west of the city we arrived at the Centre for Learning, the smallest of the K schools we'll visit. With a shorter stay their we thought it would be more difficult to connect with everyone, but due to their size and the more intimate organization of the place our students were made right at home. We stayed with students and teachers in a few of their multi-age & coed hostels (dorm like houses that also function as classrooms). Their architecture and the overall campus layout was amazing. The present campus of CFL is about 6 years old. Very well done! Kelly, Laura, and I met with their staff while our students atended classes. We talked at length about the intent of the schools, our experiences as educators, issues related to students and community, and ofcourse the relative financial aspects of running schools and living in the US and India. Oak Grove has a lot to learn from the creative collaboration at CFL. Small is good.

We've spent the last day now on the road west as we make our way to the Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary in the state of Kerela.
Yesterday we stopped at a 12th century temple and then got to Mysore, checked in to our 10 $7 rooms and went to the famous Palace here. The king of this state was disposessed of it by the state around 1950 or so. Since then its been open to the public. The original burned down and the current palace was built around 1912. Later we did some shopping and then went out for a wonderful dinner at a multi-cuisine restaurant. Our whole day's experience was eagerly facilitated by the best possible guide, Ashok who does administrative work at CFL. He not only arranged the transportation and lodging here for us, he knew which sites to see, how to communicate clearly to our drivers, how to talk down the vendors and money changers, and generally how to do everything well. I think he saved us 1/2 a day of confusion. Thanks Ashok!!!! He took the midnight bus back to Bangalore. What a guy! We will meet again!

The kids are good....they are looking forward to the Sanctuary and the sleeper cars on the train along the coast back to Chennai. We are under 10 days now until we get back. There will most likely be no net access for the next few days until we return to Chennai.

With love from everyone here in India....
Namaste,
Dave

Today, three years ago:
A really close friend of mine passed away in a horrible way, she ODd to fucken drugs and it was the end of a beautiful and talented person, and I still miss her. From that day on I quit drugs and have been clean ever since, did any one of you met her?
So today I post this poem I wrote to her today three years ago.

Sweet Tamima
Your skin so fair
Your hair so dark
Sweet Tamima
Your laugh I won’t hear again
Your scent I won’t smell anymore.
Sweet Tamima
Laying still, eyes wide open
The prophet has taken you away
Away from here
Away from me
Sweet Tamima
Your scent has changed
The scent of flowers
Flowers from holy land
Flowers from a distant land
Sweet Tamima
Will we see each other again?
Probably not
So leave now, suffer no more
Take with you two memories
For I will keep two for myself
Your smile
Your tears

Does anybody here know of anybody anywhere that has a Kyo from Furuba hat that they're missing? My grandpa found one in my house and gave it to me. He said it might be Maia's for some reason.

Drama [<font face="Verdana" ]

[ mood | infuriated ]

The following statements are not to be taken as inflations of the truth, they are straight facts:

There is a man at Oak Grove who I will call Bob. He schedules practice for the play, every day, even on sunday. After school, the practice continues, sometimes as late as seven o'clock. He does this in such a way that characters minor, such as myself, are forced to wait until five-thirty, 2 hours after school ends, to practice a thirty minute scene. And in the case of today, and a day last week. He tells me, after I have waited so long for this one moment to speak my few lines, that he just decided not to do my scene today. Sorry, he says, but that hardly gets my wasted hours back. My mother, upon asking me how play practice went, threatens to write him an angry note. Should I let her?

A FORMAL APOLOGY [<font face="Verdana" ]

ruperthemoose
[ mood | intimidated ]

My previous entry was not meant to bash anyone in particular at the school, it was just a statement about the school in general. There are still many great things about the place, far more than the negative aspects I have noticed lately. I notice this about many things. With more publication there is less soul, less left of the original intention. In leu of a recent suspension of a student due to hateful words about the school on his blog, I am writing this clarification and apology, and I'm sorry if I have hurt anyone as a result of my statements.

marketing [<font face="Verdana" ]

[ mood | accomplished ]

Oak Grove, as it has been heading for the past couple years, is becoming more corporate. Sure, I understand they need more people to apply, more students, more donations, but at what cost to those of us already going there? We now have PINK SLIPS, we now need a SPONSOR to be in the computer lab, we now turn in slogans instead of heartfelt reflections about our experience here. Be sure to make it flattering to the school, the teacher says... Now what used to be parent only events have turned into KFA infested exhibitions of sensored performances and art, marketing campains. We can't even show the truth of what goes on here, only flowery versions of our already mild statements. Ooh, a video of dirty train in india! Did somebody say latrine? Can't have that, can we??!! I worked today and all last week on a video of our train ride experience. It was factual, it was real, and so it was canned, not to be shown on india night. Instead we have landscapes and roses and cute indian kids with blank faces. That's what the hierarchy wants to see, and that's what they'll see. A toned down calendar show of what was an amazing, real, experience.

HELP, PLEASE!! [<font face="Verdana" ]

nineinchnoodles
People of the Oak Grove, I summon thy help!

I was wondering if any of you knows whatever happend to my artbooks, they used to be in the library under the custody of Payne the librarian, and I never got them back, there were two of them, one of them seemed made of pieces of different books swon together and had the face of a doll sown on it. (I'm not that conerned about that one) But the other one was a big green medical book in which I wrote "The Book of Sick and Filth" and inside had photos of dead people, accidents, freaks, tumors, diseases, just a shitload of really bad taste and repugnant photographs, I really miss that book and I wish I had it back, if possible, so if any of you have any info, You'll be rewarded, I swear!
